What are Termites?
The subterranean termite Reticulitermis flavipes (Kollar) is probably the most destructive and widely distributed species in North America. This species has acclimatized to southern Ontario to such a degree that dozens of municipalities report some degree of infestation, including Toronto, Guelph, Windsor, and Kitchener-Waterloo.
It relies heavily on the soil for life sustaining moisture thus damage caused by them is not usually noticeable on the surface as they avoid exposure to the air. Termites eat cellulose obtained from wood and wood products, but feed primarily on the sapwood and soft wood between the annual rings. Moist damp wood is preferred and termites can and will feed on sound seasoned lumber.
